It is the 3rd largest population of dugongs in the world, placing New Caledonia with an important responsibility in the conservation of this vulnerable species. The association "Opération Cetacés", dedicated to the study and conservation of marine mammals in New Caledonia since 1966, conducts monitoring of dugongs. The "Dugong Action Plan" is currently in its second phase until 2021.
